THE GATHERING
EXPERIENCE
Teachers and artisans in primitive technology and homesteading/self-reliance skills are invited to attend these gatherings to share ideas and methods as well as spread the arts through hands-on workshops. You can expect skills instruction from some of the nation's top primitive technologists and artisans.
The Gathering is seven days beginning the afternoon of Day 1, classes running days 2-6, and camp clean-up/departure on Day 7. Classes are held from roughly 9am to 4pm and special activities occur in the evenings after a meal break. Lecture/Discussion Sessions are information-oriented and each covers a broad subject. Demonstrations are how-to presentations with some practical instruction. Hands-On classes provide you with the instruction needed to actually complete a project or practice a new skill. The entire camp experience is outdoors so be prepared and flexible for Texas weather!
SkyEarth prides itself on being family friendly. Each year we have the wonderful instructors from Natureversity Outdoor School in Austin running our Kids Camp activities during the day so that parents can get a break if needed. Kids Camp is for children ages 5 - 12 years.
Please refer to our Event Schedule for a list of classes and activities for our current gathering - the schedule is updated periodically as new instructors and classes are planned. Below are typical classes you can find at the SkyEarth Gathering.

Welcome to SkyEarth 2025!
Join us at SkyEarth for an immersive, hands-on experience where skilled instructors and passionate artisans come together to share, teach, and celebrate the arts of self-reliance and primitive technology. Over the course of seven days, you'll engage with some of the nation’s top experts in the field, learning invaluable skills through interactive workshops, demonstrations, and discussions.
The gathering is seven days long, with various classes being held from 9am-4pm with special activities occurring in the evenings after dinner. Lecture and discussion sessions are information-oriented and cover a broad array of subject matters. Demonstrations are how-to presentations with some practical instruction. Hands-on classes provide you with the instruction needed to complete a project or practice a new skill. The entire camp experience is outdoors so be prepared and flexible for Texas weather!
We encourage attendees to arrive by 12pm on Sunday for camp setup, orientation of the site, and to be ready for opening circle. Check-in will take place at the gate when you arrive. The gate opens at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, and 8:00 a.m. on Sunday. Check-in closes at 5:00 p.m. on both days. Morning announcements occur around the fire pit every morning at 8:30am. Classes will begin Monday morning at 9am and run through Friday afternoon at 4pm.
Next will be the Opening Circle Sunday at 7pm. We will begin our Opening Circle with instructor and staff introductions and the courses they will be teaching throughout the week. Some classes may have size limits so this will be where you sign up for those. Some classes may have materials fees. Many classes you will just be able to show up for on the day of the class. Opening Circle will also include the lighting of our family fire during the telling of the story of the First Fire. This is a great time to get to know the instructors and other campers around our SkyEarth fire pit.
SkyEarth is proud to be a welcoming space for families. Each year, we partner with the incredible instructors from Natureversity Outdoor School in Austin to host our Kids Camp, offering engaging outdoor activities for children ages 5–13 while parents participate in workshops.
Please refer to our Event Schedule for a list and description of classes and activities for our current gathering.
We look forward to seeing you at SkyEarth!

About SkyEarth
-
Service Animals are permitted. Service animals are not permitted to roam free and must have designated vests.
No pets allowed. Period. This is not an "ask forgiveness later" situation - we will ask you to turn around if you have your pet with you. While we are animal lovers, we are also a working ranch with livestock and must say no to outside pets. Leave your pets at home or with a sitter. There may be boarding facilities in Graham you can utilize so your dear animal friend is close.

April in Texas is variable to say the least. It can be cool in the mornings, hot in the afternoons, and downright chilly at night with spring showers that could pop up. (Temperatures range from 40s to 100s.) Layer your clothing accordingly and be prepared for a chance of thunderstorms.
Bring some type of weatherproof shelter. It is generally good weather, but Biblical rains are possible with gale force winds. Common shelters are canvas wall tents and tipis, yurts, backpack or family tents, and even improvised shelters.
-
The parking area will be provided away from tent camping. There will be an area for tent camping only and a large area for camping in your vehicle whether it be a VW bug, a gypsy wagon, a truck or RV. You will be able to drive your belongings into your camp, then drive back out to the parking area.
The RV and vehicle camping area is remote from the main camping area.
See map below for where to park.
-
Light Source: Avoid bright LED lights that light up the entire campground. Headlamps with a "red" setting are nice.
Toiletries: The port-o-johns will have toilet paper and be cleaned during the week. Associated handwashing stations will have soap and be refilled during the week. Other toiletries you will need to supply for yourself.
We will have a cold-water shower station set up for campers to use in a private area of camp.
Food: Bring your own food and plates/ bowls/utensils for the week. We will provide the evening meal for campers (included in ticket price) but are not able to accommodate all food preferences or allergies.
Suggested Items to Pack: Water Containers, Camp Chairs, Cash, Garbage Bags, Notebook, First Aid Kit, Variable Clothing, Bug Repellent, Tools for Classes (Knife, etc.), Cart/Wagon for hauling trash out of camp.
The town of Graham is a short 15 minute drive away and has a Walmart and grocery store. We will have a central dish-washing station available for use.
-
We primarily camp in tents and tipis, with multiple port-o-john stations with handwashing stations.
We will have car and RV camping areas available, but there are no water/electric/sewer hookups.
We have multiple potable water stations. Bring containers to fill and take to your campsite.
We will have a primitive camp shower setup outside of main camp to clean the dirt off during the week. You may also bring solar showers to use at your campsite.
While sleeping under the stars is also encouraged, know that Texas weather is always consistent in how it changes from second to second. Please be prepared to have a shelter from any storms that may pop up.
Garbage: Pack in, pack out. We will not have trash receptacles for everyone's trash. If you are flying in and out, we can help.
Fires: No ground fires permitted at campsites. Bring a fire pan if you plan to have a fire. We will have our central Fire Pit available. A central pile of wood will be provided.
Music: While we love music, we ask that you do not turn on radios or other electronic music in camp. We prefer to keep the sounds of nature going and play live music instead of electronic. We encourage you to bring an instrument if you play!
-
You may be asked to pay a materials fee for the materials used in your class. Some instructors may simply ask for a donation to cover their costs. The materials fee should be just that and should not include any expense for teaching the class, however, instructors may charge for the time that it took to collect the materials.
-
The cost of ticket prices plus material costs. A bow stave could cost over $100. A willow basket might cost between $15 and $50 in materials, depending on the size of the basket. Felt for a hat might cost $35. A hide for tanning, $15-$35. It is impossible to say how much you should bring for materials fees but $150 should be sufficient and you may not spend even a third of that. Materials fees will be updated on the online schedule so you know what to expect in advance.
Bring cash as there will be no ATM's on site. There are ATMs at gas stations and stores in Graham. Instructors don't take credit cards or checks.
-
Instructors and attendees may have handcrafted items or swag for sale.
We will also have SkyEarth t-shirts for sale prior to the event. Order them online (coming soon) and pick them up at the gathering.
-
A knife is an essential tool to almost all classes!
A good, sharp knife and sharpener are a must. Instructors and other campers will be on hand for instructions on tool use, care and maintenance. For flintknapping, tools will be available for use and for sale. If you have your own flintknapping kit be sure to bring it. Many types of knives will be available for sale at the gathering.
Some tools will be made available by the instructors; please take care of their tools and follow directions. Please make sure that they have all of their tools back before leaving a class.
See our Gathering Experience page for a list of camping and other items to bring with you.

KID’S CAMP
-
Attention, parents of young wildlings! SkyEarth’s Kid’s Camp is back, and it’s more epic than ever! Hosted by Chris Hyde and the Natureversity crew, this isn't just babysitting in the woods; it's a full-blown survival school for ages 5-13. Your kids will learn knife carving, pottery, soap making, welding, fire and shelter building, nature walks, painting with pigments, and even cooking over the fire. Pack their gear, send ‘em off, and enjoy a well-earned break while they return covered in dirt, wisdom, and probably a new favorite stick!
-
Monday to Friday from 9am-3pm. Just a heads-up there’s a lunch break from 12-1 pm; so you’ll need to collect your young explorers during that time.
-
Please make sure they come equipped with the essentials: a water bottle (hydration = happiness), weather-appropriate clothing (because Mother Nature loves surprises), good shoes (flip-flops are for the beach, not the trails), and most importantly, a great attitude! We’ll handle the fun, but we need your help ensuring no one shows up dressed for a snowstorm in July or barefoot on a hike. Thanks for setting them up for success!
